To Turn the Garage or Not to Turn?

Turn the Garage or Not?

So we're debating to turn the garage or not. Since we have to do a full blown wetlands permit but we want to avoid a variance, we have the option and space to extend the driveway enough to make the turn into the garage.

This is a potential sketch of what a turned garage looks like
The driveway would require a big extension for the auto court [and this potentially is a steep grade so would require a lot].

Pros:

  • We can get more space without pushing forward. The garage can go back a bit further this way, so it could be wider.
  • Greater privacy. Since the house is close to the road, this helps us turn the orientation of the house towards the gorgeous back of the property.
  • Potential for greater curb appeal.

Cons:

  • We'll need to extend the driveway adding a little more wetlands mitigation than initially anticipated. Since we have to do this anyway, it's not a huge deal.
  • There's a slope in the area that will be our driveway for the turned garage. So that means potential massive expansion cost to fill up the driveway in order to make this work. This might be a deal breaker.

Next Up:

Either way, we should be able to get a 2 car garage into the property. And whether it's turned or not, won't affect the functionality and layout of the inside. So it will really boil down to the costs of the driveway.
